Choosing your Options

Which way Now ?

Your curriculum in Years 10 and 11

We work closely with your teachers at the Allertonshire to ensure continuity and our curriculum is built on excellent foundations laid in years 7, 8 and 9.  All students must follow English, Mathematics, Science, RE and PE however you can choose 4 additional options and we recommend you choose a balanced set of subjects.

The English Baccalaureate

This is one way of ensuring you study a balanced set of subjects and we believe it is appropriate for most students. It is a way of recognising achievement across a core of academic subjects when you gain C grades or higher in English Language, Mathematics, two Sciences, a Modern Language and a Humanities subject.

Can I study the English Baccalaureate at Northallerton College?

All of the necessary components of the EBacc are available at Northallerton College and last year about 1/6 of students achieved the EBacc. GCSE’s in English Language, Mathematics ,  double Science or the separate sciences of Biology, Chemistry and Physics are all taken as part of the core.

To study for the EBacc you will also need to choose a Modern Language and a Humanities subject as two of your four options

Languages options

Humanities options

French, German or Spanish

History or Geography

What is the College’s view of the English Baccalaureate?

We remain committed to providing you with the widest range of qualifications to suit your aspirations and needs. Our advice has always been that most students should consider studying a Modern Language and a Technology subject.  It is therefore a question of whether or not to study Geography or History rather than one of the many other options available.

Principles for making your option choices

When you make your option choices, keep the following principles in mind:
  • Choose subjects that you enjoy
  • Think about how you learn best and choose subjects that match your strengths
  • Choose subjects that support your career plans
  • Read about the former students who have achieved their goals. Do you recognise yourself ?
  • Talk to tutors, teachers, parents and to the teachers and students at the College about the different options. Find out all you can about the courses before you make your choices
  • Keep your options open by choosing a broad range of subjects

Guidelines

  • You must choose only one technology subject (one from Engineering, Food, Graphics, Catering, Resistant Materials or Textiles).

  • Please read the subject details in the prospectus. All choices are explained there.

  • You cannot choose any subject more than once.

  • Because there is significant overlap of subject material you cannot take Dance and Drama together.

  • We would expect most students to study a foreign language. Many universities and employers will expect a qualification in a language as part of a general education. Many popular university courses eg. Medicine, English, History, Law and Business, require a language qualification. If you think you may be interested in following this career path later on choose a foreign language as part of your GCSE programme,

  • As some subjects may be oversubscribed, we ask you to make a reserve choice.

Case studies of former
students' at Northallerton
College

Imran
Imran did 10 GCSEs including
Applied Double Awards in Science and Art. He Gained 8 A*-C grades including English and Maths. He always wanted to follow a career in Science or design so he went into the sixth form at the college and chose to do Art and Design A level and Applied Science Double Award A level. He passed all his A level qualifications and gained a place at Bradford University to do a BSc in Microbiology.

Helen
Helen always wanted to do a Science degree. She did 11 GCSEs and went on to do 4 A levels including Chemistry, Biology and Maths. She is completing her second year in Natural Sciences at Durham University.

Charlotte
Charlotte chose to study a broad range of GCSE subjects and took Modern Foreign Languages as she wanted to go to university but was not sure what she wanted to study. She worked hard for her GCSEs and got good grades for all her subjects. She chose to take English, French and Applied Art and Design for her A level studies. She enjoyed all her courses and is now studying Fine Art at Leeds Metropolitan University.

Richard
Richard had an excellent attitude towards his learning and had already decided that by the end of Year 11, he was likely to be looking for work based training or full employment. As part of his four programme he followed a level Motor Vehicle NVQ course and gained a great sense of satisfaction from the developing practical workshop skills, by the end of year 11 he had secured a place at Darlington College to study a level 2 Motor Vehicle programme. A key aspect in achieving this College place was his Work Experience references and portfolio of skills developed throughout Years 10 and 11.

Stuart
Stuart started his NVQ level 2 in serving food and drink after studying catering at the College. He had always wanted to work in the catering industry and this gave a really good grounding in the skills he needed to work in hotels. He passed his level 2 and is now working towards level 3 and completing the British Inn keeping Certificate. He eventually wants to own his own restaurant.

Bev
Bev always wanted to be a social worker so she followed the GCSE double award in Health and Social Care and Applied Science. She gained A*-C grades in eight subjects including English and Maths. She went into the sixth form and did A-levels in Health and Social Care, Sociology and Biology. She is going to university this year to study Nursing and wants to become a midwife. But she could still go into social work if she wants to, she will decide when she has passed her Nursing qualification.

Matthew
Matthew chose to study double award courses at GCSE as he felt happier completing modules of work which were assessed or tested at regular intervals. He did not like the pressure of examinations and found some school work difficult. He was really interested in art and hoped to get a job in that area. He completed his GCSE courses passing them with D and E grades; but did not want to go straight to work so chose to complete an intermediate GNVQ in Art. This was a one year course which allowed him to get onto the Advanced Applied Art and Design course even though he had not managed to get four grade C passes at GCSE. Having successfully completed the Applied Art and Design course he then went to Sheffield Hallam University to study 3D Design and is now completing his Masters degree.
Sarah
Sarah studied a wide range of GCSE courses including GCSE French and German, Textiles (technology), Geography, English and English Literature. She chose to study AS level French, German and Business studies (even though she hadn't studied it at GCSE), and Geography. At A2 she continued with French, German and Business Studies and then went to study International Business Management and Marketing at Sheffield University. She spent time at work placements in France and Germany and had a good opportunity to be offered one of the jobs at these placements.

Emma
Emma studied a variety of GCSE subjects including GCSE French, German, Graphics, Business Studies, English and English Literature. At AS level she studied French, German and History and took the GCSE Russian course. She is now at Durham University studying French, German and Russian.
