Main Topics

The Cambridge National allows students to achieve a GCSE equivalent qualification that incorporates elements of generic ICT and more technical Computer Science units.

The qualification will equip students with sound ICT skills for every day use and provide opportunities to develop, in context, transferable skills such as planning, research and analysis. Teaching and learning will reflect the way young people use new technology and will allow students the freedom to explore more deeply the things that interest them.

Unit 1: Understanding computer systems (Compulsory unit)

In this unit, students will develop the knowledge and understanding required to use computer systems effectively in a variety of contexts including home, school and the workplace. They will have increased understanding of the need to protect personal data and that of others.

Students will learn:

  • The features of computers ie hardware, software
  • How to work with information and data to meet a specific business need
  • How ICT can be used to support business working practices
  • How legal, ethical, safety and security issues affect how computers should be used

Students will be assessed via a 1 hour written examination.

Unit 2: Using ICT to create business solutions (Compulsory unit)

In this unit, students will learn how to use software tools to handle data and communicate information for a range of business purposes.

Students will learn:

  • How to use techniques to search for, store and share information
  • How to select and use software to handle data
  • How to select and use software to communicate information for a business purpose
  • How to use software tools to format and present information

Students are required to study a further two units. These include options to develop skills in creating an interactive product using multimedia components, creating digital images, creating products using sound and vision, introduction to computer programming (to create mobile phone, tablet computer applications) and exploring computer hardware and networks.

Assessment

Units 1 and 2 are assessed as outlined above, the additional two units are assessed via the completion of coursework tasks presented in a portfolio of work. This work is marked by college staff and moderated by the awarding body.

Progression

Success in this subject allows students to progress on to Sixth Form ‘A’ Level/Applied ‘A’ Level or OCR National Level 3 courses at Northallerton College, and to achieve good results through these courses. Many of our students progress to take the subject further in higher education.
