Allertonshire Science staff will identify
students who are suitable for this course.
Main Topics
This course leads to three separate GCSE
awards i.e. in Biology, Chemistry and
Physics.
In Year 10, students will study 1 unit in
each of the three separate subjects Biology,
Chemistry and Physics. These form Part 1 of
the final GCSE award in each subject. They
will also start on the unit in each subject
that forms Part 2, which will be completed
in Year 11. Part 3 of each award is also
completed in Year 11. The content of each
subject relates to everyday science, the
acquisition and application of skills, how
science works and its role in society.
Assessment
This is by examinations and college
assessed units.
Year 10
There will be 1 unit exam in each of the
three subjects which form Part 1, in May.
Each test is 60 minutes long and each exam
counts towards 25% of the final grade in
each subject.
Year 11
In
January, students will sit the Part 2 exam
for each subject which consists of 60 minute
written papers. Each exam is worth 25% of
the final grade in that subject. In May a
further 60 minute written paper that tests
Part 3 will be taken in each subject ; again
worth 25% of the final grade.
Year 10 and
11
At opportune times during normal class
practical work in each of the 3 subjects,
college-assessed units will be taken. These
will be practical investigations two written
tests set by the examination board. An
assessed unit is completed for each subject
and is worth 25% of the final grade.
Progression
Success in this subject allows students to
progress on to Sixth Form ‘A’ level or
Applied ‘A’ level courses at Northallerton
College, and to achieve good results through
these courses. Many of our students
progress to take the subject further in
higher education. |
