Main Topics

Four practical options must be chosen from the following activity areas: games, gymnastics, dance,
athletics, swimming and outdoor adventurous activities and fitness/health activities. Students must be assessed as an active participant: The four assessments will be from at least two groups/ways of
thinking, and at least two performances must be as a performer/player.

These assessments will be internally assessed with a moderation from an external assessor.

The written examination consists of 4 sections:

  • Health and fitness.
  • Principles of training.
  • Factors affecting individual performance and participation.
  • Social and cultural factors affecting participation.

Assessment

60% internally assessed practical.
40% terminal examination.

Students who study this course need to be highly committed to improving their own personal levels of performance by competing in school competitions, need a willingness to analyse their own performance and improve techniques and skills at GCSE level through the use of the extra curricular activities programme. They must also be aware of the demands of the examination work.

Progression

Success in this subject allows students to progress on to Sixth Form ‘A’ level or Applied ‘A’ level courses at Northallerton College, and to achieve good results through these courses. Many of our students
progress to take the subject further in higher education.
