AQA GCSE Syllabus

We aim to continue the work studied at KS3 helping the students to gain fluency in communication skills and success in comprehension skills.

Topics studied during the GCSE course:

Theme – Lifestyle: to include health and relationships and choices.
Theme – Leisure: to include free time and the media and holidays
Theme – Home Environment: to include home and local area and environment.
Theme – Work and Education: to include school and future plans and current and future jobs.

Assessment

There are four Units to be assessed:

Unit 1
Listening is by examination and represents 20% of the total marks (Foundation or Higher tiers available).
Unit 2
Reading is by examination and represents 20% of the total marks (Foundation or Higher tiers available).
Unit 3
Speaking is by controlled assessment and represents 30% of the total marks.
Unit 4
Writing is by controlled assessment: 2 tasks to be submitted, written in examination conditions. This represents 30% of the total marks.

Each of the following is offered as a single GCSE option

French, German, Spanish

Students continue with the language(s) they studied at KS3.  It is not possible to start a new language in Year 10. Students cover the syllabus in one or two languages in two years, giving them the opportunity to widen their vocabulary and develop their grammatical knowledge.

Progression

Success in languages at GCSE allows students to progress on to Sixth Form AS and A2 courses at Northallerton College.  Many of our students go on to study languages in higher education.

Language ‘A’ levels combine very well with many other subjects (e.g. Business, Geography, Law, English and History, as well as the Sciences) and is highly regarded by universities and employers.
