Main Topics

The GCSE specification in Engineering will enable students to develop a broad knowledge and
understanding of the engineering industry, its organisation, products and processes through
investigation, research and practical application. This new kind of qualification will help in developing a new generation of craftsmen, technicians and technologists. The certificate is a double award being equivalent to two GCSEs, graded on the same A* to G scale. Entry onto this course will be discussed with Allertonshire and college staff. The course entails 3 units, studied during years 10 and 11.

Unit 1: Design and Graphical Communication

This unit is about the process of designing. You will learn about the following aspects of the design
process:

Analysing client design briefs.
Developing design specifications and solutions.
Applying scientific principles.
Producing and reading engineering drawings.
Selecting appropriate drawing techniques.
Communicating a design solution.

Unit 2: Engineering Products

In this unit you will make an engineered product. The unit will develop your understanding of the process of designing a product and producing it. In this unit you will learn to:

Use product specifications.
Read and interpret engineering drawings and diagrams.
Select suitable materials, parts and components for a product.
Create a production plan.
Use processes, tools and equipment, including Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM), required to make an engineered product.
Apply health and safety procedures.

Unit 3: Application of Technology

Technology affects every stage in the design and manufacture of products. In this unit you will
investigate the impact of modern technology on the design and manufacture of a range of products in different engineering and manufacturing sectors. You will learn about:

Information and communication technology.
New components and a range of modern materials, including smart materials.
Control technology.

Assessment

The course comprises of three units. Units 1 and 2 will be teacher assessed through a portfolio of work and count for 60% of the marks. Unit 3 will be assessed by external examination and counts for the
remaining 40% of the marks.

Progression

These units will enable progression to some units in the Vocational ‘A’ Level in Engineering, Product Design: Resistant Materials A Level and National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in performing Engineering and Operations.
