Religious Studies is a full GCSE course
followed by all students in Key Stage 4. It
is a vibrant, socially relevant subject that
addresses many of the issues that face
people in the world today, allowing students
to question themselves and others, to deepen
their knowledge and understanding not only
of themselves but of others as well. The
Religious Studies course complements other
aspects of the curriculum, e.g. PSHE and
Citizenship.
The department is denominationally neutral –
equal consideration and respect will be
given to all faith groups and individual
points of view. It is up to the student to
decide which beliefs or opinions to adopt
once they have looked at all perspectives of
an issue.
Main Topics
We follow the AQA Religious Studies Syllabus
B Ethics course. This provides an
opportunity to look at the major moral
issues today – abortion, euthanasia,
treatment of criminals, issues of race and
gender and the environment.
Assessment
The course is assessed by examination only.
Students complete the full GCSE. However
there is also the capacity to achieve a half
GCSE should it be appropriate for individual
needs. External examinations follow a
modular pattern and these are taken at the
end of Year 10 and Year 11.
Progression
The course is an excellent foundation for
many of the Sixth Form courses offered at
college.
The course is taught to all students within
the guidelines of the North Yorkshire agreed
syllabus and parents have the right to
withdraw their son or daughter on the
grounds of conscience. This is done through
a process of discussion with the College.
