Remote Access

Do you need to access the college network from home?

Well if you do then we have good news for you.  There will be two ways to access your work from home.

Full Remote Access You connect to the college network from your home PC and logon to a college computer as though you were actually in the college.  This means access to your mywork area, shared areas, the Intranet, e-mail (staff only), e-portal, learning materials etc. Click here to download and install on your computer
Remote Access Lite You can have access to your mywork area, e-portal and e-mail (staff only) from a secure link on this web site. Available Easter 2007

Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does Full Remote Access work?

You download a file from the link above.  When you run this file on your computer, a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection is installed on your computer.  At the same time another icon is put on your desktop which uses this VPN connection to connect to a computer in the college for you to logon to.  First you make a VPN connection by clicking on the icon, then you connect to a college computer and logon as normal.

2) What happens when I finish connecting to the college network?

Logoff from the college computer as normal, and then close the VPN connection that has been setup.  This is usually achieved by right clicking the connect to the college network icon on your status bar in the bottom right of your screen.

3) Can I use the Internet when I have a VPN Connection set up?

Yes, but via the college network.  You cannot use your own PC to connect to the Internet because your PC is connected to the college network via the Internet.  Everything will be back to normal once you close the VPN connection again.

4) Do I need a Broadband connection at home?

Realistically, yes.  It will work over a dial-up telephone connection but it will be frustratingly slow to use.  Broadband will give you a much better experience.

5) Do you provide Technical Help?

We cannot advise individuals over their home PC configurations, the service is provided as an extra facility to allow students and staff to work more flexibly.  We are looking to get a group of students to 'help' each other by way of discussion groups.
