The prison
(former County Gaol) was built in1783 and is
amongst the oldest in the country still
serving as a prison. Since 2002 it has
operated as a Young Offender Institute.
The College is
pleased to be working in partnership with
HMYOI Northallerton (the prison). Not only
are we neighbours but we also share an
education role with young people – in this
case sentenced (under two years) young
offenders. Because for most young offenders
this is the last establishment they will
attend before being released, education and
training are vital in helping gain
meaningful future employment and helping
prevent re-offending.
The College runs
a learndirect centre in the prison which is
a fully equipped e-learning facility with 10
PCs and all associated provision.
Since August
2007, over 70 learners/offenders have worked
on some 675 learndirect courses, mostly
relating to Skills for Life (literacy and
numeracy). Around 30 of these learners have
successfully progressed to National Test
Certification at Level 1 or Level 2.
