Brief Outline
We
offer French and German. The subjects are
studied through a variety of topics which
include young people today, leisure, healthy
living as well as the environment and
contemporary issues. At AS and A2 level, at
least two cultural topics are also studied,
and may include literature, history or the
discovery of a French or German region. We
endeavour to develop linguistic ability
using a variety of sources. There are
opportunities to visit France or Germany on
our exchange or on our ’home stay visits’.
Methods of Teaching
A variety of methodologies are used: taught
lessons for the introduction of new topics
and grammar and some independent research
when preparing for examinations. Independent
listening and reading programmes are an
integral part of the course, as are speaking
lessons with the foreign language
assistants. Lessons are conducted in the
foreign language as far as possible.

What We Expect From You
Students
should have a minimum of a Grade B at GCSE.
They should also have a strong commitment to
learning, enthusiasm and a conscientious
approach.
Future Prospects
A modern
language combines well with many different
subjects. Studying a foreign language to at
least AS level alongside subjects like
Business, Art, Management, Law, Medicine and
Science makes a young person more
marketable. On application forms, employers
often have a space for language skills. A
modern language is desirable when studying
subjects such as History and English at
university. A modern language will also be
increasingly vital for employment with major
international companies.
