Brief Outline

This course is currently under development and is subject to change in terms of content which will be designed to match experiences, meeting the local need, local industry and facilities.
This course is designed to provide a highly specialised work-related qualification which can be used in a number of engineering sectors. It gives learners knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare for employment, higher education, degree and professional development programmes. This course comprises six units over a 2 year course and is broadly equivalent to 1 GCE A level.


Methods of Teaching


This course will involve discussion, independent study and note taking, practical work, problem-solving, research activities, outside speakers, visits, videos/DVDs, and use of the Virtual Learning Environment.

Year 12 Certificate
Unit 1 - Health and Safety in the Engineering Workplace (Mandatory) 10 Units
Unit 2 - Engineering Drawing for Technicians
10 Units
Unit 3 - Computer Aided Manufacture 10 Units

Year 13 (Subsidiary Diploma)
Unit 4 - Mechanical Principles and Applications
10 Units
Unit 5 - Properties and Applications of Engineering Materials 10 Units
Unit 6 - Mathematics for Engineering Technicians
10 Units


What We Expect From You

Entry requirements are at least Grade C in an appropriate Technology subject, a commitment to learning, flexibility in terms of attending local engineering works and participating positively in lessons. A self motivated attitude to working outside of class time is expected. Progress onto Year 13 will depend upon a satisfactory result at Year 12 and discussion with subject/course leader.

Future Prospects

This certificate can lead to employment at local or national areas or into higher education where opportunities in Engineering are in demand. Further studies can be various strands of the Engineering sector, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical.
