Brief Outline
This course looks at the physiological,
psychological, social and cultural aspects
of sport. At AS topics covered are:-
Improving health and fitness, heart/lung
function, nutrition, analysis of movement
and blood transport system (the skeletal and
cardio-vascular systems). The students will
also cover skill acquisition and perform in
various practical roles. These are built
upon at A2 and students would cover topics
such as:- elite performers, deviance in
sport, Olympic ideal as well as personality
and biomechanics.
Methods of Teaching
The subject is team-taught by each tutor
specialising in a different area of the
syllabus. Students are encouraged to be
proactive in their learning and use both the
resources and technology available to them
to carry out homework during private study.
Appropriate visits/conferences will be
arranged to enhance learning.
Assessment
AS
Unit 1 - Opportunities for and the effects
of leading a healthy and active lifestyle.
Exam in the summer.
Unit 2 - Analysis and evaluation of physical
activity as performer and/or in an adopted
role. Practical assessment in two out of
three roles - the performer,
coach/leader or official.
A2
Unit 3 -
Optimising performance and evaluating
contemporary issues within sport. Exam in
summer.
Unit 4 - Optimising practical performance in
a competitive situation.

What We Expect From You
Students
should be a keen sportsperson and be
interested in physical education and sport.
The subject has close links with Science. We
would expect students to have either a Grade
B in GCSE PE or B grades in Double Award
Science, or triple Sciences.
Future Prospects
The subject
combines well with both Sciences and Applied
A level Performing Arts. It offers
progression for those wishing to go on to
higher education, especially those wishing
to study sport. It is also a valuable course
for those wishing to study Physiotherapy or
considering a career in the Police or Armed
Forces.
