Brief Outline
The AS and A2 Music courses both develop the
main strands of music from the GCSE course,
increasing in both content and academic
focus, as well as expecting higher standards
in performance and general musicianship.
In both AS and A2 courses, students take
their performance and composition skills to
a higher level, and develop their
understanding of music through the study of
set works.
Methods of Teaching
Whether preparing exam pieces, conducting
ensembles, playing through set works and
students’ compositions or singing Bach
chorales, performance is at the heart of
music making and understanding. Alongside
this, composition is taught in individual
tutorials, with other lessons devoted to
preparing for the assessed set composition
briefs and technical studies. Musical
understanding is developed through
performance of and listening to set works,
alongside analysis, score reading, research,
broader study and discussion.

What We Expect From You
All
students should be at least at Grade Five
standard on their chosen instrument at the
start of the AS course, and at least Grade
Six at the start of the A2 course. Students
should have achieved at least a Grade B at
GCSE Music. You should be prepared to work
hard to develop all aspects of your
musicianship, including instrumental/vocal
practice, and be prepared to contribute
actively towards the musical life of
Northallerton College. It is important that
students also develop their own particular
musical interests and expertise, and
participation in musical activities outside
of college is strongly encouraged.
Future Prospects
Higher
education opportunities in music and the
performing arts are extensive. The AS and A2
courses combine well with all other subjects
- students with AS/A2 music are regarded
highly by all higher education providers
because they demonstrate a combination of
academic study skills, personal discipline
and practical application.
All students taking GCSE, AS and A2 Music or
Music Technology courses are entitled to a
weekly, free instrumental/vocal lesson
provided by County Music Service.
