Brief Outline

The course builds on the work at GCSE level in algebra, trigonometry, geometry and statistics. Mathematics combines well with most other ‘A’ level subjects but is essential for many students hoping to study Sciences at university. Our current students take it in combination with a wide variety of other subjects.

For both AS and A2, there are two Pure Mathematics units and one Applied unit (Statistics 1).

Core 1 is the only unit assessed without a calculator.

There is no coursework assessment in any of the units taken.

Methods of Teaching

All lesson plans, together with any presentation materials used, are available to students on the intranet.

A successful student will be able to use these resources to complete the course assignments.

Teachers use a variety of teaching and learning approaches including teacher explanation, problem
solving investigations and animations. Supported by regular assessment.

What We Expect From You

A successful AS Mathematics student needs to have achieved at least grade B at GCSE.

Within the Pure Mathematics units, later units are dependent on earlier ones. Assessment may include knowledge and use of earlier material. For this reason, students need to have been successful in both Core units in AS to proceed onto A2.

Future Prospects

Advanced level Mathematics is a very good general qualification for a wide range of higher education courses and careers.

One of the aims of the course is to develop the ability to think logically and solve multi-stage problems, important skills in both higher education and employment.
