Brief Outline

This is a diverse subject that uniquely combines skills from both the Arts and the Sciences. Geography develops the ability to combine scientific principles with economic awareness, environmental concern and an appreciation and tolerance of others attitudes. It extends the skills and expertise gained in GCSE Geography, such as decision making and problem solving. Fieldwork continues to be a compulsory element of the course.

Methods of Teaching

Teacher-led lessons, practical fieldwork, group activities, independent learning, use of ICT and regular exam practice. Assessment at AS consists of two exam papers. Although there is no coursework, there is a question on Module Two which asks about a fieldwork investigation which students have undertaken. Assessment at A2 also consists of two exam papers. Module Three contains two structured questions and one essay question and Module Four requires students to undertake a Geography fieldwork investigation which is recalled under examination conditions.

You will study a wide range of topics which include elements of Physical and Human Geography. Physical Geography deals with the processes operating within and on the Earth and in the atmosphere. Human Geography is concerned with people and their activity on our planet.

Geography is open to well motivated students who enjoyed the subject at GCSE and achieved a B grade or above. Students should also have at least a C grade in English and Science.

Future Prospects

Geography students are amongst the most employable because they develop the key skills that
employers are looking for. Many students continue their studies in higher education. Some study
Geography itself or combine it with other subjects as a joint honours degree. Others study Geography related subjects such as Environmental Management, American Studies or Town Planning.
