Brief Outline
The Applied Science course enables students
to develop a broad understanding of a wide
range of scientific principles in all three
sciences. If a student has a real interest
in Science and prefers coursework to exams,
the Applied course is a good background for
further study in many scientific areas. It
is a double award consisting of eight
portfolio units and four tested units.
Methods of Teaching
A variety of teaching and learning styles
are used, including traditional teaching,
independent research, field work and group
work. There is a heavy emphasis on practical
work, enabling students to obtain the
required skills for their portfolio units.

What We Expect From You
A
successful Applied Science student needs to
be well-organised and able to meet all
deadlines. The ability to use several
sources of information to complete portfolio
work in their own words is essential.
Excellent attendance is also required, along
with a mature attitude to practical work.
GCSE grades - preferably BC or above in
Double Award GCSE Science and four other
GCSEs at C grade or above including
Mathematics.
Future Prospects
The qualification offers the opportunity to
enter higher education in many scientific
fields e.g. Forensics, Teaching, Health
Care, Sports Science and Food Technology.
Since the course enhances and develops
practical and study skills, it is an
excellent qualification to offer employers. |
